    Global cellular IoT module shipments saw their first-ever annual decline in 2023, falling 2% YoY, according to Counterpoint’s latest Global Cellular IoT Module and Chipset Tracker by Application report. Inventory adjustments following supply chain disruption and reduced demand in some key market verticals like industrial and enterprise were some of the key factors driving this decline.

    4G Cat 1 bis grew the fastest in 2023, capturing over 22% of the shipments. In China, 4G Cat 1 bis has now become the primary cellular standard for POS, smart meter, telematics and asset tracking markets, owing to its affordability and energy efficiency. The market is slowly transitioning from 4G Cat 1 and NB-IoT to more efficient 4G Cat 1 bis.

    Commenting on market dynamics, Associate Director Mohit Agrawal said, “India and China have shown positive growth due to increasing demand in the smart meter, POS and asset tracking markets. Conversely, the rest of the world witnessed a sharper decline, indicating a lack of expected market momentum.”

    Agrawal added, “Around 12% of the modules shipped in 2023 were equipped with AI capabilities at the software or hardware level. These modules are gaining popularity in high-end markets such as automotive, router/CPE and PC, facilitating the management of the escalating data load in these sectors.”

    Global Cellular IoT Module Shipments Share by Vendor 2023

    • Quectel, the leading module vendor, experienced a decline in its market share primarily because of weakened demand in markets outside China. The company has partnered with Syrma SGS Technology to manufacture IoT modules in India.
    • China Mobile and Fibocom experienced double-digit YoY growth. China Mobile’s growth was driven by smart meters, asset trackers and POS applications, while Fibocom’s growth was driven by POS and telematics applications.
    • This year’s merger between Telit and Thales propelled Telit Cinterion into the top five vendors of IoT modules. To further solidify its presence in India, Telit partnered with VVDN for local production.
    • Several Chinese brands like Unionman, OpenLuat, Lierda and Neoway have shown significant growth within specialized markets like smart meter, asset tracking and POS.

    Commenting on the market outlook, Research Analyst Anish Khajuria said, “In 2024, the IoT module market is expected to return to growth in the second half of the year with normalizing inventory levels and increasing demand in the smart meter, POS and automotive segments. Moreover, substantial growth is forecasted for 2025, coinciding with the widespread adoption of 5G and 5G RedCap technologies in smart meters, routers/CPE, POS systems, automotive solutions, and asset tracking applications.”

    NVIDIA introduced Blackwell, a powerful chip with 208 billion transistors, designed for training massive 10 trillion parameter AI models. It uses a custom 4NP TSMC process and connects GPU dies with a 10 TB/second chip-to-chip link. They also launched GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, linking B200 Tensor Core GPUs with the Grace CPU. Counterpoint Research predicts NVIDIA’s Data Center revenue to reach over $72 billion in 2024, a 134% increase from last year, thanks to Blackwell’s adoption by cloud providers and countries for their AI supercomputers.

    NVIDIA NIM: Foundational software for AI deployments through API services

    NVIDIA is driving AI adoption forward with the introduction of NVIDIA NIM, an API-based platform designed for AI inferencing. This is in addition to the NVIDIA Enterprise platform which already provides access to a suite of services for AI training and inferencing. This platform facilitates quicker deployment times and offers plug-and-play options, aiming to simplify the intricacies involved in developing software for AI inferencing. It provides access to ready-made platforms through APIs for inferencing AI models for real-time insights. NVIDIA has indicated a price of $1/per GPU/per hour for access to NVIDIA NIM.

    Denmark next country for AI sovereignty – Supercomputer with 191 DGX systems

    Denmark’s collaboration with Novo Nordisk and NVIDIA to establish an AI Innovation Center underscores the global shift towards domestic AI data centers, emphasizing data privacy and insights protection. This strategic initiative, encompassing healthcare, drug discovery, quantum, and social science, reflects a broader trend among countries. Denmark’s commitment, including the deployment of over 191 DGX systems, showcases a concerted effort towards advanced AI capabilities in key sectors.

    Computational lithography accelerated by integrating cuLitho in production processes

    The integration of NVIDIA’s cuLitho in semiconductor manufacturing will speed up photomask production that takes weeks to days and help reduce power needs and potential environmental harm, further enabling higher chip density and yield.

    As semiconductor scaling becomes more complex, a greater number of foundries, EDA vendors and lithography equipment makers will be integrating the NVIDIA cuLitho in their process flow as the amount of data processing requirements in innovative mask techniques, photoresist modeling and high-NA EUV technology for new technology nodes is expected to increase significantly.

    Marvell reported a slight increase in revenue in Q4 2024, up 1% sequentially to $1.43 billion. However, the highlight of the quarter was the high growth recorded in its data centre business, which benefited from increased AI spending. Compared to Q3, data centre revenues increased 38% and were up 54% on a YoY basis. Overall fiscal 2024 revenue totalled $5.5 billion with strong growth in the H2 driven by AI demand. However, Marvell posted a $392.7 million net loss, a lot worse than the $15.4 million it posted in the previous year.

    For Q1 2025, Marvell is forecasting total revenues of $1.15 billion with weak demand expected to continue in the carrier, enterprise and consumer segments. However, the company expects that revenues in these segments will stabilise after Q1 2025, with a recovery expected in H2 2025.

    Data Centre Segment

    Data centre revenue reached $765 million in Q4 with cloud services being a significant contributor while revenue from AI-driven optics exceeded $200 million (Exhibit 1). In fact, data centre revenue – particularly AI-driven optics – accelerated throughout the year, increasing from around one-third of total revenue in Q1 to more than half at the end of Q4. Clearly, the acquisition of Inphi is proving to be a major strategic asset.

    Demand for its cloud-optimized silicon solutions is up, driven by the increase in AI and accelerated computing investment. The chip vendor has successfully executed several 5nm designs in the last two years and expects initial shipments for its two 5nm AI compute programs to start in Q1 2025. Marvell believes that it is on track for a very substantial ramp-up in H2 2025.

    Marvell reported that it is also heavily engaged with cloud customers on new 3nm opportunities and remains confident of its 3nm funnel and design win rates. In addition, AI is increasing the cadence of new chip releases, and this plays well to Marvell’s strength as a key partner for its cloud customers with a proven ASIC platform.

    The company also announced an extension of its long-standing collaboration with TSMC to develop the industry’s first technology platform to produce 2nm chips optimized for accelerated infrastructure. This new platform will enable Marvell to deliver substantial advancements in performance, power and area, which will be critical for next-generation accelerated workloads.

    Carrier and Enterprise Networking

    Carrier and enterprise markets have been experiencing a period of weak industry demand for several months. As a result, revenues at both segments were down sequentially in Q4. Marvell expects further sequential declines in Q1 of approximately 50% for carrier networking and 40% for enterprise. Beyond Q1, Marvell expects these markets to stabilise and forecasts a recovery in fiscal H2 2025.

    At their peak during the pandemic, the carrier and enterprise networking market contributed a total of $2.5 billion to Marvell’s revenue. Looking forward, Marvell expects both of these markets to contribute over $1 billion each in revenue on an annual basis once demand normalizes. Both these businesses have very long product life cycles – typically seven years in production. In particular, Marvell stresses that it has not lost business or market share, with the lower revenues being attributable to demand softness and inventory corrections. In fact, the company maintains that its up-coming product upgrades will drive up revenues as both these cyclical markets recover over the next few years.

    Analyst Viewpoint

    Marvell is a critical enabler of accelerated infrastructure for AI with a full suite of solutions across data centre interconnect, switching and compute plus in-house expertise to integrate all these technologies together. Essentially, the company is a one-stop shop for data centres. As a result, Counterpoint Research believes that the company is well positioned to capitalise on the massive AI-based technology build-out as it continues to gain momentum during 2024.

    Growth in generative AI applications is driving cloud providers to build new data centres. As a result,  Marvell is experiencing an increase in design wins in AI, custom silicon and networking optics. This is providing good opportunities, particularly in custom silicon. However, this is not a zero-sum game with both the merchant and custom silicon expected to benefit. Also, the on-going transformation of data centre architectures is resulting in increased investment in inferencing, which drives more bandwidth between data centres, resulting in more demand for Marvell’s data centre interconnect products.

    In Q1 of fiscal 2025, Marvell expects continued sequential growth in its data centre revenues with initial shipments of its cloud-optimized silicon programmes for AI complementing its electro-optics products. Carrier, enterprise and consumer markets are expected to bottom out in Q1 –  representing a cyclical trough – which limits any downside. With a healthy gross margin of  42.1% and focus on high-growth areas (and clear view of demand for fiscal 2025 and 2026), Counterpoint Research believes that Marvell is set for recovery and a profitable fiscal 2025.

    Anthropic, one of OpenAI’s top competitors, introduced its latest Large Language Model (LLM), called Claude 3, in early March. The AI community was taken by surprise as Claude 3’s capabilities proved to be superior to that of OpenAI’s flagship GPT-4, marking the first instance of GPT-4 being outperformed. Meanwhile, Google’s Gemini Ultra trailed behind both.

    The launch of Claude 3 ushered in what appears to be the second phase of LLM competition, where companies prioritize in-context understanding, robustness and reasoning over mere scale. The generative AI sector has recently been accelerating rapidly on the back of contributions from key players including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and Mistral AI.

    The first phase of the LLM competition was set in motion following the debut of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022. This phase was characterized by a race to scale, with companies vying to develop increasingly powerful models primarily focused on size and computational capabilities.

    OpenAI’s GPT-4 once epitomized the zenith of these efforts, setting benchmarks for what generative AI could achieve in terms of understanding and generating human-like text. Many subsequent LLMs, including Google’s Gemini series, Anthropic’s Claude 2, Meta’s Llama series and Mistral AI’s Mistral Large, continued to challenge the dominance of GPT-4, yet failed.

    However, the ascendancy of Anthropic’s Claude 3 signifies a paradigm shift to a new era. Now the battlefield has become multi-polarized.

    Phase Two Begins

    We think GPT-4 being surpassed by Claude 3 marks the second stage of LLM contests:

    • The Claude 3 family showcases three cutting-edge models, named Claude 3 Haiku, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Opus, arranged by their growing capabilities. Claude 3 Opus is superior to GPT-4 in all key performance benchmarks.

    • Claude 3 has an unprecedented level of understanding in advanced science. For example, Kevin Fischer, a theoretical quantum physicist, was astounded by Claude 3’s grasp of his doctoral thesis.

    • Claude 3 not only comprehends complex scientific principles but also exhibits a degree of emergent capability. For example, another expert in quantum computing was taken aback when Claude 3 reinvented his algorithm with just two prompts, without seeing his yet-to-be-published paper.

    • The degree of Claude 3’s “meta-awareness” (can be just superb pattern-matching alignments with data created by humans) lets it figure out that it is being tested in a simulation in the needle-in-the-haystack evaluation. This testing method, just like “finding a needle in a haystack,” is designed to ascertain whether LLMs can accurately pinpoint key facts within hundreds of thousands of words. Initially invented by Greg Kamradt, a member of the open-source community, this approach quickly gained traction among major AI companies. Giants like Google, Mistral AI, and Anthropic now commonly showcase their new models’ performance through these tests.

    What does it mean to be in the Stage Two of LLM competition?

    We have observed that currently there is an accelerated rate of innovation progress in the LLM battlefield. Even though it is only March, a host of contenders, such as Google’s Gemini Ultra and Mistral AI’s Mistral Large, have already attempted to take the throne from OpenAI’s GPT-4. However, it was Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus that emerged on top, marking a pivotal breakthrough in the ongoing quest for supremacy.

    The rivalry within the realm of closed-source LLMs has escalated, positioning closed-source generative AI technologies as a pivotal tactic for forging any company’s defensive “moat”.

    In the ever-changing LLM landscape, developers need to understand that given your specific use case, making assessments that truly gauge a model’s strengths and weaknesses becomes more important than blindly trusting the general benchmarks:

    • Stay agile, ready to integrate newer models or versions as they become available. Today’s choice might need reassessment tomorrow.
    • A blend of understanding each model’s unique strengths, continuous exploration and adaptation cannot be more emphasized, given the specific needs of your applications.
    • Much like the varied tactics of donning armor for battle, adapting your prompts is crucial to maximizing a model’s potential. Comprehensive tutorials are readily available online to guide you.

    HONOR’s MWC profile has developed strongly over the last few years. In 2024, HONOR saw its biggest MWC launch since spinning off from Huawei more than three years ago. The brand has come a long way and is now trying to navigate the difficult terrain of making on-device GenAI look compelling.

    AI has been a recurring theme across most of the tech sector this year and is something smartphone OEMs have kicked off in earnest – yet few have articulated the strategy or end-user benefits in depth.

    However, HONOR has been one of the exceptions. Counterpoint’s Research VP Peter Richardson met up with HONOR CMO Ray Guo at the MWC to get his take on innovation, openness, and how these two areas fit into the company’s broader AI strategy.

    • GenAI and LLM capabilities accelerating – and HONOR is rebuilding, rewriting the whole technology stack on OS. This means:
    • More seamless collaboration across devices.
    • More fluent interaction as shown by the Intent-based UI (IUI).
    • This is the ‘Magic’ that is being communicated to the consumer.

    Analyst Take

    • HONOR’s IUI is a logical way forward, but its on-stage demonstrations were not convincing, at least not yet.
    • And there is much more to HONOR’s new devices than the GenAI features, camera functions being the most obvious. Here, HONOR is in safer territory, with strong performance from its prior devices that are already well-recognized.
    • HONOR stands a good chance of making further market share progress in Europe during 2024 but it will not be easy. There is stiff competition from the likes of OPPO and Xiaomi. And of course, Apple and Samsung remain strong rivals with Samsung’s own GenAI features better communicated.
    • On-device GenAI messaging is important, which we believe was a significant factor in the Galaxy S24’s success in Western Europe, where the model saw a 28% bump during the first three weeks of availability. There will be a lot of competition going forward and numerous opportunities as well.

    According to Counterpoint Research’s latest Weekly Smartphone Model Sales Tracker, global unit sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series devices grew 8% YoY compared to the Galaxy S23 series during its first three respective weeks of availability. S24 and S24 Ultra demand unit sales remained relatively flat compared to the S24 Plus, which grew by 52% YoY to account for over one-fifth of sales.

    “The big driver this year for Samsung’s key flagship has been the S24 Plus model,” states Minsoo Kang, Senior Analyst. “It’s hitting the sweet spot on pricing, nudging upgraders as well as specs to support new users wanting optimized on-device AI.”

    Strong performance of the Galaxy Plus series, which comes with a robust 12GB of DRAM – the minimum spec for a large language model to run well – highlights the increasing importance of higher specifications to provide optimized on-device experiences – a key selling point during Samsung’s S24 series launch.

    Samsung Galaxy S24 vs S23 Global Unit Sales Comparison, First Three Weeks of Launch

    From a regional perspective, the Galaxy S24 series has been especially popular across Western Europe on preorders, as well as Korea and the US, with respective volumes up 28%, 22% and 14%.

    “Although overall growth of the Galaxy S24 series remains in single digits globally, it’s high single digits. And in Samsung’s biggest market – the US – we’re seeing YoY growth in the mid-teens – solid numbers especially considering the tough February.” says Jeff Fieldhack, Research Director for North America.  “And considering we’re still really at the beginning stages of the coming GenAI smartphone boom, there is plenty of runway for more growth.”

    NVIDIA’s involvement in ADAS and AD chip technology has been significant in recent years with the company advancing in developing powerful and efficient chips tailored for these applications.  Among its key partners are Volvo for autonomous driving, SAIC for intelligent EVs, BYD for next-gen ADAS as well as a host of others.

    Qualcomm’s robust roadmap is facilitating collaboration with the likes of Renault to develop centralized compute architecture of the OEMs next-gen SDVs. It’s also working with GM on next-gen ADAS and GWM for autonomous driving in upcoming models.

    Mobileye was one of the early movers, establishing early collaborations with Chinese EV OEMS to provide ADAS chips; the company’s closed ecosystem and relatively lower computing power has resulted in those companies transitioning to alternative solutions.

    But Mobileye remains a key player, working together with the likes of Porsche and Volkswagen to develop ADAS and AD tech as well as autonomous driving systems.

    • Apple: Apple’s shipments grew in Q4 2023 due to the launch of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series.

    • MediaTek: MediaTek had a strong Q4 with inventory restocking by smartphone OEMs. Growing demand for 5G and 4G SoCs and the successful ramp-up of the company’s third-generation flagship SoC, Dimensity 9300, contributed to the growth.  

    • Qualcomm: Qualcomm’s shipments increased in Q4 2023 due to restocking and design wins for flagship chipsets Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 8 Gen 2 from Chinese smartphone OEMs. 

    • Samsung: Samsung’s shipments slightly increased in Q4 2023 due to the launch of Exynos 2400 with the Galaxy S24. The Samsung Galaxy M14 series’ launch with Exynos 1330 and the Galaxy A54 series’ launch with Exynos 1380 have added volumes to the overall Samsung numbers.

    • UNISOC: UNISOC’s shipments increased in Q4 2023. We are expecting UNISOC to gain traction in the entry-level 5G segment in H2 2024 after recent management changes and a greater focus on the 5G market.

For the global market, HONOR employs the open-source LlaMA 2 model for Magic Portal, contrasting with its self-developed LLM used in China.   • Three years after launching the OnePlus Watch, the company announced a new smartwatch – OnePlus Watch 2 – at MWC 2024 in Barcelona. The latest model is a substantial upgrade with a bigger and brighter display, dual-band GPS, bigger battery, and increased internal storage among others. However, the primary upgrade is its ability to run both Google’s WearOS 4 and Real-Time OS (RTOS) without sacrificing the battery life.

    While most High-Level OS (HLOS) smartwatches offer a battery life of a day or two, the OnePlus Watch 2 can last for 100 hours on a single charge in smart mode, and even 12 days in power-saving mode, alleviating concerns over daily charging.

    Google has made fundamental changes to the WearOS 4 with a hybrid interface, which allows OnePlus to cherry-pick the best of both OSs. The smartwatch can seamlessly switch between RTOS and HLOS depending on the active task. Tasks like running WearOS apps or third-party apps will invoke WearOS.

    Other features like continuous health tracking and smartphone notification mirroring would be taken care of by the power-efficient RTOS. This means RTOS will be constantly active, whereas the HLOS will only run when required. We can expect to see this hybrid version of WearOS 4 in upcoming smartwatches, paving the way for further adoption of Google’s smartwatch OS and maintaining share against Apple’s Watch OS.

    OnePlus’ dual-chipset approach facilitates the switch between RTOS and HLOS, powered by the BES2700 microcontroller unit and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 application processor respectively. The Snapdragon processor shuts down completely when in power-saving mode.

    With Fossil’s exit from the smartwatch market and Samsung’s Galaxy watches running on its Exynos processors, Qualcomm can maintain or even grow its presence across the smartwatch space with the OnePlus’ Watch 2 owing to its wider presence across the globe compared to the Pixel Watch 2.

    Retailing at $300, the OnePlus Watch 2 is priced lower than its competing WearOS offerings from Samsung and Google and would likely appeal to users entering the WearOS ecosystem or OnePlus users looking for enhanced integration with their smartphones. Older-generation Galaxy Watches retailing at lower prices would also compete with the smartwatch in emerging markets like India. Like its peers, the smartwatch is incompatible with iOS and Android Go-powered smartphones.

    While the OnePlus Watch 2 has implemented commendable upgrades, we expect to see further advancements like cellular connectivity, fall detection and SOS in its next update. FDA approval, like its peers, would also prove to be a boost in showcasing its capabilities.

    With major smartphone OEMs expanding their foray into the health-tracking market, OnePlus could also bring more devices like smart scales and smart rings in the coming years to remain competitive.

    OnePlus had less than 1% market share in the global smartwatch market in 2023, which could grow owing to this new upgraded iteration.
